Set in New York in the Depression, this is the story of Jim Braddock, who takes up boxing to make money to feed his family, and eventually goes up against champ Max Baer, notorious for having killed two men in the ring. James J. Braddock, born in New York City, was known locally for his thunderous right hand and successful amateur boxing career. After turning professional, he defeated foe after foe, and his rapid rise from obscurity earnt him the nickname, the Cinderella Man. He was given a shot at the world light heavyweight title against champion Tommy Loughran in 1929, but lost in a 15–round decision. Following that defeat and the stock market crash of 1929, Jim Braddock struggled to win fights and provide for his young family. Eventually Jim's luck turned. In 1934 he had upset wins against Corn Griffin and John Henry Lewis. With these two wins, Braddock set himself up for another shot at the world title – against heavyweight champion, Max Baer. On 13 June 1935, as a 10 to 1 underdog, Jim took the world title from Max Baer in what was described as, 'the greatest fistic upset since the defeat of John L. Sullivan by Jim Corbett'. Braddock would lose his heavyweight title two years later in an eight–round KO to 'The Brown Bomber', Joe Louis. Jim was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1964, the Hudson County Hall of Fame in 1991 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001.… (more)

I like this book for many reasons. First of all, the tittle of the book caught my attention, I only heard about Cinderella Girl, but did not know it can be a man. Then the book was about a real guy, it talked about a heavyweight boxer who named James J. Braddock's second chance of his career during the 1930s in America, after he lost all of his money in the economic depression. And in order to keep his family away from hungry, he restarted his boxer career. For the third reason, the story inferred the theme which I like--family. During the hardest time of James, his family stayed with him, and he did what he could for what he loved and believed in.
So I believe this book should be red. ( )

This story talks about a man called Jim Braddock. He is a successful boxer in New York. His life is very good and also for his family. But in October 1929 the American economy fails, and at the same time he starts to lose in the boxing ring. Also he will get a second chance to return to the ring after he decides to stop it. The end it was unhappy that he was not strong or healthy and his arm was very weak.

I loved the book,it was intersting and it was based from real story. He was boxer and he worked hard to change his families life to let them live better than before.

I liked the book. It is a non-fiction novel and it is based on realife story. The man suffered in his life and worked as a boxer to get food for his family. It is a very sad story and really emotional. I loved it becuase this kind of men are rarely found. ( )
