No current Talk conversations about this book. wheels coming off on this series ( )Temeraire and Laurence arrive in Australia to find the Royal Governor, William Bligh, overthrown, the colony under the control of the rebels and both sides wanting their intervention. Stripped of rank and title Laurence feels unobliged to interfere and in any case has three dragon eggs, sent to establish a covert in the colony, to watch over. On a mission to establish a road to the grassy plains one of the eggs is stolen and a search/chase across the unexplored continent ensues. New world building on a new continent that has its own unique and previously unknown (fictional) large animals where events change the balance of world power yet again, or do they? This book is an enjoyable piece of the larger story of Novik's Napoleonic world with dragons, but not a self contained story, requiring knowledge of the previous books in the series. Okay, so because it follows on from plot points in the other books I can’t really tell you exactly why William Laurence and Temeraire are off to Australia, you’ll just have to read and find out. But in Australia they are. And one event leads to another and soon they find themselves in the outback, encountering bunyips and god knows what. The problem is that there is no central plot to hang their adventure on. It is just a journey across the outback, with a couple of dragons thrown in. And, well, it is a tad boring in places. Which is a huge disapointment as I’ve really enjoyed all the other books in this series. Okay, so the first more than any of the others, but they were all good fun. http://www.susanhatedliterature.net/2011/03/tongues-of-serpents/ Something of a disappointment, but improves on subsequent reads. I have been a pretty good fan of this series, but unfortunately, I've grown tired of it by now. This isn't dragons against Napoleon anymore. This isn't an intrigue in China. This is exile to Australia. Long treks, dragon eggs, and filler await us. Maybe it's because I took almost a decade to return to the series or I burned out, but this didn't capture my imagination. Almost at all. No hope for glory, just establishing a colony? For dragons? This is how the world ends. With a whimper, not a bang. Not sure I'll continue with the last novels, but since Novik has proven herself pretty good with the mythology retellings, I will continue there. :) no reviews | add a review
