O. Henry à La Carte: The Gift of the Magi and Other Favorites

This small book offers a brief introduction to the writings of O. Henry. It includes three of his most famous short stories -- "The Gift of the Magi", "The Last Leaf", and "The Ransom of Red Chief". Also included are three other stories ("Springtime A La Carte", "A Strange Story", and "Hearts and Hands)." The collection also includes five poems ("Hard to Forget", "Chanson de Bohème", "Nothing to Say", "The Old Farm", and "Two Portraits").

Accompanying the stories and poems are some fine pen-and-ink drawings, rendered by Charles Dana Gibson in his characteristic, early 20th-century style. At less than 60 pages, O. Henry à La Carte offers no more than a taste, but its small size makes it ideal for an Xmas stocking or momento. It also is a good way for a new reader to make an acquaintance with this idiosyncratic writer and unusual literary figure. ( )
