I’ve been doing a slow reread of the Dresden Files with some mixed results. I remember loving this one, though, the first time I read it, and it really held up. I love the Knights of the Cross, and there are several fantastic battles, so vividly described it’s almost like watching a great action movie. The bloodthirsty, revenge-loving part of me also loves the scene with Cassius. ”People like you always mistake compassion for weakness. Michael and Sanya aren’t weak. Fortunately for you, they’re good men.”
Cassius laughed at me.
“Unfortunately for you, I’m not.”

Also, I’m digging James Marsters as narrator on 1.5 speed, so I think that’s how I’ll continue the reread! ( )

Another good one. More violence than I normally like, but done well enough. Some macho talk I'm not into either, but not overdone.

There are 12 written in the series so far, with another 12 planned. We'll see how it goes. So far, so good! ( )

One of favourites in the series. "They stole the freaking Shroud of Turin?" comes in the first 30 pages and it's gets better from there! ( )

"Death Masks" is a cornerstone with events that will refer back to it in almost every book. However, The book doesn't scream, "Pay attention to me!" When I first read it many years ago, I did not know the significance of meeting Butters, Sanya, getting the sword and the coin, and the encounter with Susan.

It was also good to see the dynamics of Michael's family and learn more about the sword-bearers.

If you are jumping in the series and don't want to start from book one, read "Death Masks." ( )
